The mythology of the solo founder building a startup in a weekend has always been aspirational fiction. Real software products need real engineering — backend services, database design, authentication, payment processing, deployment infrastructure, monitoring, maintenance. The idea that one person could handle all of it while also doing sales, marketing, and customer support was compelling but not entirely honest.
In 2026, it is increasingly literal. Not because the work has gotten easier, but because the leverage available to small teams has changed fundamentally. A developer working with Claude Code, a good system design, and the right infrastructure stack can build and maintain software that would have required a five to ten person engineering team three years ago.
This is not theoretical. There are real products, built by tiny teams, being used by real customers, generating real revenue. The question worth examining is: how does it actually work, where does the leverage come from, and where does it still break down?
The Stack That Makes It Possible
The infrastructure layer has commoditized in ways that compound the AI leverage. Three years ago, running production infrastructure still required engineering specialization. Today, the combination of managed services and AI coding agents means a small team can maintain production-grade infrastructure without infrastructure specialists.

The Workflow: How AI Coding Actually Changes Daily Development
The productivity gain from AI coding tools is not uniform across the development workflow. Understanding where the leverage is — and where it is not — is important for realistic planning.
Highest leverage: feature implementation from specification. Describing what you want to build to Claude Code and having it produce working, tested code for a feature with clear requirements is where AI coding tools genuinely change the game for small teams. A feature that would take a senior developer a day to implement and test takes Claude Code a few hours of agentic iteration with human review. Multiply this across a feature roadmap, and small teams can execute at a pace that was previously impossible without significant headcount.
High leverage: refactoring and code migration.
